The mission of the Healthcare Club is to provide a forum for students to learn about the business of healthcare, to interact with other students who are interested in healthcare, and to meet with leaders and key decision makers in the healthcare industry.

Officer Bios

Kim Barr - Co-President
Education: University of Minnesota - Carlson School of Management, BSB Accounting, 2005

Work Experience: Prior to HBS, Kim spent six years (four post-undergraduate) at UnitedHealth Group. She first rose to Senior Associate in the Corporate Development group, which executed on over 40 acquisitions representing $20 billion in value during her tenure. She also worked alongside executive management on special projects related to the organization’s stock option backdating remediation efforts, competitive intelligence, capital structure, and other strategic initiatives. In 2008, Kim joined the $40 billion UnitedHealthcare business segment as Director of Financial Reporting and Analytics where she created a new standard for management reporting deliverables that has been extended to all segments of UnitedHealth Group.

Karen Sein - Co-President
Education: University of California Berkeley, BA Public Health, 2006

Work Experience: Karen has diverse managerial experience at the Regional and Medical Center level with the provider organization at Kaiser Permanente. Most recently, she was as a Business Consultant for Kaiser's Northern California Regional offices, guiding front office registration and revenue collection operations across 21 medical centers. Karen's work included process improvement of emergency department operations and an analysis of health plan benefits and copayment waivers that recaptured $5 million in missed revenue opportunities. Prior to that, Karen was a Project Manager at the South San Francisco Medical Center, where she worked closely with senior leadership to execute strategic projects, such as the development of two new clinical departments. This summer Karen will be a Business Development Intern at Regent Surgical Health, a developer in surgery centers and physician-owned hospitals that specializes in turnaround situations.


 

Kevin Hwang - Chief Financial Officer
Education: Cornell University, BA Biological Sciences and Economics, 2007

Work Experience: Prior to business school, Kevin was a Business Analyst at McKinsey & Company. He advised a number of Fortune 500 healthcare clients with various business strategy challenges, including new product launches, declining profitability, product life cycle management, business unit divestitures, product portfolio management, organization design, and post-merger integration. Additionally, Kevin is the founder, chairman, and former CEO of The Triple Helix, Inc., an international non-profit publication focusing on science, society, and law. Kevin will spend the summer in private equity at BC Partners.

Gil Addo - Healthcare Conference Co-Chair
Education: Yale University, BS Biomedical Engineering and Economics, 2007

Work Experience: Prior to HBS Gil worked in technology and Health IT. Gil spent two years as an analyst at Xerox in Investor Relations where he helped senior management articulate the company’s strategy and financial performance to shareholders and the investment community. His work included extended projects with Xerox Health Solutions. He spent the summer prior to HBS as a research associate at Dimagi, an early-stage health technology company focused on infrastructure in developing regions. There he led the optimization of a mobile health application Commcare, currently being piloted in Tanzania and Bandledesh. While at Yale, Gil spent nearly two years researching targeted oral drug delivery systems for chemotherapy agents in the Fahmy lab.

Andrew Lechleiter - Healthcare Conference Co-Chair
Education: Georgetown University, BA Pre-Med and Spanish, 2004

Work Experience: Prior to HBS, Andrew spent two years as an analyst in the Healthcare Investment Banking Group at UBS Investment Bank in New York. Participating in and executing several equity, debt, and M&A pitches and transactions, Andrew also helped organize and run the 2008 UBS Global Life Sciences Conference comprised of more than 320 presenting healthcare companies. Prior to UBS, Andrew worked for three years in specialty and primary care neuroscience sales with Eli Lilly and Company in the Washington, D.C., area and was part of the field sales launch of Cymbalta, a novel treatment for depression and fibromyalgia. Andrew also spent two summers as an undergraduate working for Eli Lilly in oncology R&D laboratories in Madrid, Spain, and Indianapolis, Indiana.

 

Manoj Patel - VP of Alumni Affairs
Education: University of Auckland, MB ChB, 2005

Work Experience: Manoj has worked in a range of capacities in the health sector. He graduated from medical school in 2005 and worked for three years as a resident doctor in hospitals across New Zealand and Australia. During 2008-9 Manoj worked as a Clinical Consultant for an international Health IT company, Orion Health Ltd. Manoj is also the founder and director of Young Professionals Ltd, a start-up company supporting junior health professionals to have more fulfilling careers (www.scrubs.co.nz, www.eyez.co.nz, www.scriptz.co.nz).

Corey van der Wal - VP of Careers
Education: Pomona College, BA Economics, 2007

Work Experience: Prior to attending HBS, Corey worked as an Investment Banking Analyst in Lazard’s Healthcare/Life Science Group, responsible for evaluating strategic alternatives and executing a variety of M&A and financing transactions for clients in biotechnology, pharmaceutical and specialty pharmaceutical companies across all stages of development. In addition to investment banking experience, Corey has worked for APT Pharmaceuticals, a startup biotech based in Northern California, in a business development and commercialization role.

Lorrayne Ward - VP of Careers
Education: Harvard College, AB Social Studies, 2003

Work Experience: Lorrayne is a Harvard MBA/MPP joint degree candidate. Prior to HBS, Lorrayne managed a program in Tanzania to make subsidized anti-malarial treatment available through rural drug stores for the Clinton Foundation. She also worked in strategy development for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, in Geneva, Switzerland, for two years. Lorrayne previously was a consultant at McKinsey’s New Jersey office, serving primarily pharmaceutical clients.

Heather McCullough - VP of Community Development
Education: University of California Berkeley, BA Molecular and Cell Biology, 2002; Stanford University School of Medicine, Ph.D. Genetics, 2009

Work Experience: Heather innovated a genomic technique to identify novel molecular biomarkers for molecular diagnostics and personalized medicine. She managed a team of four statisticians, scientists, and engineers, and guided the complex research investigation from conception to publication, keeping the team on task to meet deadlines. She made difficult decisions about experimental strategy and efficient resource allocation based on limited information. Heather trained six Stanford researchers to perform the technique and orchestrated collaborations with labs at Stanford and the National Autonomous University in Mexico. Previously, Heather worked at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and developed gene expression profiling experiments using microarray analysis.

Jonathan Sheffi - VP of External Affairs
Education: MIT, BS Computer Science & Engineering, 2003; MIT, BS Mathematics, 2003; MIT, MEng Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, 2004

Work Experience: Jonathan's career is focused on the realization of personalized medicine for patients worldwide. This summer, Jonathan worked at Life Technologies for the CEO Chief of Staff on the company’s business plan for genomic medicine. Prior to HBS, Jonathan interned in the Office of Biotechnology Products at the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. Jonathan’s full-time experience includes both marketing analysis and direct-to-physician sales roles at Amgen, as well as consulting work on behalf of Accenture’s Health and Life Sciences Strategy practice. Jonathan's graduate research at MIT focused on computational molecular biology, and his thesis was awarded the David Adler Memorial Thesis Prize.

Jacob Bregman - VP of Marketing and Technology
Education: Princeton University, AB History, 2006

Work Experience: Prior to HBS, Jacob worked at the Advisory Board Company in Washington, D.C., where he managed the firm’s relationships with 115 hospitals and health systems overseas. In this role he consulted with hospital executives in 25 countries, educating them on U.S. best practices and collaborating on implementation strategies for local health systems. He was also responsible for annual membership renewals totaling $3.6 million. Jacob is trained as an EMT and served as Crew Chief for the Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad, providing 9-1-1 ambulance response in Princeton, N.J.

Jennifer Rentas - VP of Philanthropy
Education: Harvard College, AB Social Studies, 2003

Work Experience: Prior to beginning a joint degree at the Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School in 2009, Jennifer spent two and a half years with New York-Presbyterian Hospital, working first as the Project Manager for the Office of the CNO where she managed the development of a Master’s level program in nursing leadership; and then as the Manager of Special Projects for the EVP & COO, leading a variety of patient safety and performance metrics initiatives. Prior to NYP Jennifer spent two and a half years as the Analyst to the Executive Team at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, N.J.

Andrew Kadar - VP of Speakers
Education: University of California Berkeley, BA Economics, 2006

Work Experience: Prior to HBS, Andrew worked as an Associate Consultant with L.E.K. Consulting in San Francisco. While at L.E.K., Andrew specialized in the Healthcare Services Practice where he advised payor and private equity clients on M&A and business strategy. Andrew will spend the summer working for New Capital Partners, a private equity firm that invests in healthcare, financial and business services.

Pooja Mehta - VP of Speakers
Education: Northwestern University, BS Electrical Engineering, 2006

Work Experience: Prior to HBS, Pooja was a business analyst at McKinsey & Company, where she developed strategic recommendations for clients in the provider, medical device and retail pharmacy industries. Her project experience includes advising two hospitals on service line growth strategies, developing marketing strategy for a medical device company, cost benchmarking generic pharmaceuticals to develop a global sourcing strategy for a drug retailer, and redesigning business processes for a medical diagnostics company to reduce working capital. At Northwestern University, she spent a year as a co-op at Medtronic’s Cardiac Rhythm Management Research Group, developing novel applications and implantation methods for pacemakers.
